20 Things I Want My Kids To Know

1. You are my world.
Everything I do or choose not to do is for you. I always have your best interest in mind.
All the decisions I’ve made are out of love for you. I will continue to advocate for you for as long as you need or want me to. I’m your number one fan.

2. Remember the Golden Rule.
Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

3. Life isn’t fair.
Sometimes it sucks. There will be times when you want to give up or maybe ask yourself “why me?” and that’s ok. I’ve been there, but I want you to know you’ll make it through, and there really is a reason for everything. Even though life isn’t always fair, life can be very good – like your favorite roller coaster. Up hill, down hill, twists, turns, fun and scary at the same time.

4. Apologize when your wrong.
Own your mistakes. We all mess up. Be sincere when you’re apologizing.

5. You can do and be anything.
I mean it. If you have a dream or goal, you go for it. Don’t let anyone tell you different.

6. Success comes in many shapes and sizes.
Your definition of success is all that matters. Not your friends or what society says success is.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and don’t be afraid to make mistakes or fail. Don’t be afraid of success either.

7. I don’t have all the answers.
I love that you 100% believe that I’m like the Oracle of  motherhood, but I am far from it.
I am doing and giving you my best. With every birthday and new phase you go through, in my head I’m like
“let’s try this and if that doesn’t work then it’s on to plan B.” By the time I’ve finally figured everything out you’re switching things up on me again.

8. Some days you just can’t.
I get it. Maybe you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or maybe you’re not feeling well, maybe the sun wasn’t out and it was raining. I’ve been there. Those are the times we need “all the nopes that ever noped” t-shirts.
I wonder if that have that saying in pj’s written in fine print all over?

9.  I enjoy watching you.
All those time you catch me looking at you and ask why.  I think you’re fascinating and funny.

10. Don’t compare yourself to others.
You are unique and have amazing gifts and talents. All of the things you love about yourself, your quirks, your smile, and your laugh…even the things you don’t like about yourself – it’s what makes you who you are.
Don’t shy away from who you are – own it.

11. Everyone is not your friend.
Pick and choose your friends carefully. A true friend won’t disguise a snide comment as a compliment.
A real friend is happy for you when you succeed. Friends do not try to bring you down.

12. Be Patient.
Don’t laugh! Just because I haven’t been the best example of patience doesn’t mean to follow in my footsteps.
Building the life you want, achieving your dreams takes time. It’s ok if the life you planned faces more obstacles and changes than you every thought possible. Keep going, change and bend with it. You’ll be stronger for it.

13. Racism still exists.
Of all the things in the world I want to shield you from, racism is at the top of the list.
I’m doing my small part to make it better for you.
I’m sorry you’re living in a world where people *still* feel the need to judge you based solely on the color of your skin. I’m sorry that I have to explain to you how to behave, what to do, what to say when you’re confronted.

14.  You are more than your outward appearance.
It’s all fine and great to look nice, feel good about yourself, but that’s not all there is to you.
Be smart. Continue to learn new things. Ask questions.  Be honest. Be trustworthy. Be kind.

15. Take care of yourself.
Eat well. Get enough sleep whenever possible. Take time to be alone and enjoy your own company.
Journal – it can be good for the soul. Love yourself.

16. You can always talk to me.
About anything. Big or small.
I want you to always feel comfortable asking me questions and talking to me about any and everything.
Seriously – you can always talk to me.

17. Read and watch.
Just like you do now. Read and watch the same books as many times as you want.
You’ll pick up something you missed the first time around.

18. You can’t make everyone happy.
And it is definitely not your job to try.
It’s a waste of time and energy. Be and Do what makes YOU happy. Life is too short not to.

19. Be there for each other.
I know how much you can get on each others nerves, but I also know how much you love each other.
Have your brother and sisters back. Don’t let anyone talk smack to or about them.

20. I absolutely love being your mom!
You are amazing and I love you.
You help me to be a better person. I know your little eyes and ears are always watching and listening.
